Saturday Mentoring Program
The Saturday mentoring program is held at Diablo Valley Bridge Center on alternating Saturdays (although there are a few exceptions). Please see the Mentor Schedule on the left. The current Mentoring program will end on September 10th, 2011 but is scheduled to start up again in January 2012. In lieu of these sessions for the remainder of the year, DVBC is offering special games for beginning players as well as some special events, such as the upcoming lecture with Ron Klinger. See details on the DVBC Web Site.
The Mentor program is designed to help bridge players with 0 to 150 masterpoints. The program is set up for tables of 4 players with a mentor who play 8 boards during a 2 hour session. The mentor guides players to the proper bidding, play of the hand and defense. Currently we are using the Barbara Seagram book 25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know as our theme. Each week we take a new convention and use it for our 8 hands. Although we cover a new convention each week, the program is not about conventions. It is about all aspects of the game. As a convention is introduced, each partnership can decide whether it is one to be used as one of their agreements. It also helps the less advanced player to see how expert bridge players use bidding to get to the best contracts.
In order to participate in the mentoring session, one needs to RSVP to bridgeliaison@gmail.com in advance of the session. Walk-ins are not permitted as we organize the tables to have one mentor per table which is worked out in advance. The cost of the session is $7 for unit member and $9 for non members. We often have a speaker at 9 AM who discusses the topic of the day. These are local instructors with whom you have a chance to become acquainted and learn about their local lessons, club games and travel opportunities.
We are always looking for additional mentors (150 masterpoints or higher) to help in our sessions. If you are interested, please contact bridgeliaison@gmail.com. A script is provided for you to study beforehand. Guidelines are also provided.
Mentoring Program for
150 to 299 Masterpoint Players
This is a program subsidized by our unit and designed for players who have a minimum of 150 and no more than 299 master points. Life Masters help these intermediate players progress in their game. Once a mentor is assigned, the two will play six games together in local clubs in our unit over a six month period. The mentee will receive 6 free play coupons for his mentor. Following each game, the mentor reviews the bidding, play of the hand and defense. This review can be done immediately following the game, by phone or email.
If you are interested in being mentored in this program and have the above qualifications, please contact acbl499mentor@gmail.com.
The guidance and constructive feedback can make quite an impact in helping advancing players. If you would like to volunteer to mentor for this program, please send an email acbl499mentor@gmail.com. We are always looking for new mentors!
